Question:
What is the maximum number of follicular units extraction grafts that can be transplanted in a single procedure?
Answer:
The follicular unit extraction technique is a very demanding and time intensive procedure. Typically 300 to 500 follicular unit extraction grafts can be obtained per hour. In most cases, we like to get the grafts planted within 4 to 5 hours so after 1,200 to as many as 1,600 or 1,700 grafts are obtained, we will then begin the planting process. Sometimes grafts can be planted on one side of the scalp while on the other side more grafts can be continued to be obtained primarily from the side of the head. We have done procedures of as big as 2,200 grafts in a single day, but most commonly over a 2-day period we will transplant anywhere from 1,800 to as many as 2,800 grafts. Performed properly, follicular extraction is a wonderful technique.
