Question:
What is the largest number of grafts that can be transplanted?
Answer:
I have performed single procedures of over 4000 grafts, but for most individuals, this number is closer to 2800 to 3200 grafts. The amount of hairs that can be obtained in a single procedure is a factor of the density of the donor area, and the laxity of the scalp. Scalps that are tight are at greater risk for producing visible donor site scars, something that, as a plastic surgeon, I am not willing to risk. Over 90% of my donor site scars heal as a less than 2 mm wide line.
