Question:
Hi Dr Epstein,
How long is the procedure? I assume the procedure will involve extracting from the donor area, preparing the hair, and implanting into receipient area? Will the hair grow faster if it’s taken from the scalp? Thanks for the info so far and looking forward to hearing from you.
Cheers.
Answer:
The time of the procedure ranges between 3 and 6 hours or so, depending upon how many grafts are transplanted. Yes, that is typically how the procedure proceeds- requiring the dissection of the hairs under the microscope. Performing around 125 of these facial transplant procedures every year, yes, I do find that scalp hairs work the best, both in terms of quantity as well as quality/characteristics of the hair that essentially matches beard hair.
