Question:
I have pretty significant hair loss and was just wondering what the maximum number of transplants should be for a single session. Are there any risks associated with transplanting a large number of grafts?
Answer:
There is certainly what is referred to as mega grafting hair transplants which involve in the area of 3,000 grafts. The benefit of a mega session is obviously that there is only one episode of transplanting, the recovery is a little bit easier and you have the hair that you wish to have all done at one time.
As for drawbacks, when putting in a larger amount of hair in an area, there may be a little greater chance of loss of some hair and transplant shock so that under many circumstances the transplants are limited to a lesser, more appropriate graft number. However, mega session grafting is something that our office does on numerous occasions with excellent results.
